Since winning the seat over a Democratic incumbent in 2014, Representative Carlos Curbelo cultivated a moderate image in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. Positioning himself as a pro-immigrant, pro-environment Republican who played fair and worked both sides of the aisle would have been an effective profile for a South Florida electorate if it hadn’t been so often contradicted by his votes in Washington.
We knew Debbie Mucarsel-Powell’s story would be a great counterpoint to the dishonesty voters were sick of seeing from Washington, and we were honored to help her tell it. Based on the strength of her narrative and the popularity of her policy positions on health care, the environment, and gun safety, we were able to raise her profile and win more than 63% of the vote in a contested primary.
Once the nomination was secured and Mucarsel-Powell’s positive messaging was well established, we were able to pivot and drive the stark contrast between her and the incumbent during the general election. We demonstrated to voters that Curbelo’s actions in DC rarely matched his rhetoric back home, successfully putting him on the wrong side of issues voters in the 26th District really cared about. In the end, she ousted the incumbent by just over 4,000 votes.
